Directorial Debut: Freshman Showcase at Kent State

Making my directorial debut in fall 2022, I associate directed the Kent State School of Theatre and Dance's Annual Freshman Showcase. Working closely with faculty, performance and design/tech students, and the incoming freshman class, I spearheaded a reinvention of the show, bringing more inclusivity and equal opportunity casting (all students who audition are cast, regardless of ability or major), industry professionalism, and individualized direction and sensitivity throughout the entire process.

Our production, entitled Dancing Through Life, showcased the talents of the freshman class in a cabaret-style show, consisting of 15 scenes and songs, following the freshmen through their journey of life in 3 continuous acts; With pieces inspired by the wonder of childhood, the angst of adolescence, and the learning process of growing into adulthood.

Post-production, encouraged by faculty mentorship, and following a positive reception by cast and audience alike, I penned a guidebook for future students to utilize when directing their own Freshman Showcases. This guidebook is still being utilized as a student resource in the School of Theatre and Dance. It highlights helpful information that I and my creative team learned throughout the process, and takes a step-by-step approach to aid future directors, from initial casting to final curtain call.
